Charlotte's 9 top tips for stylish maternity and breastfeeding

Having a baby is an exciting time but accommodating your bump and changing figure can be daunting. Luckily the days of kangaroo pouches that were around when I was pregnant with my first born Jasmin are long gone. You can now dress comfortably and stylishly when pregnant. Many women wait until near the end of their pregnancy before buying maternity specific clothing thinking they will be able to ‘get by’ with what they already have. At EGG we see many women come into the store late in their pregnancy desperate for clothes that fit properly. They try the garments on; realize how fashion forward and comfortable they are, and wish they had invested in a pregnancy specific wardrobe earlier on. Well designed maternity clothing can be worn right through your pregnancy and after as your body goes back to its natural size. As more and more women are working and socializing through their pregnancies it is important that they have a functional wardrobe that they feel great in.

1. Know your body type

Just like pre-pregnancy show off the body parts you really love and make sure you wear garments that hug your bump. Long line tee shirts and tank tops look great teamed with shorts or skirts in soft, stretchy fabrics. A deep v-neck is flattering and you can always throw on a scarf in cooler months. Remember your body temperature increases when pregnant so easy-to-remove layers will be your best friend. Keep a soft and luxurious wrap with you for whenever the temperature drops.

2. Invest in key pieces
It’s a good idea to build your pregnancy wardrobe around a few key pieces that you can adapt for different situations. A really fabulous cut of maternity jean can look fantastic dressed up with a gorgeous floaty top for a night out, teamed with a jacket and shirt for a smart casual look or thrown on with a tee shirt for maximum comfort.

3. Celebrate your curves
The increased media interest in celebrity pregnancies has put figure flaunting style on the map. You should celebrate your bump and new found curves with some really gorgeous outfits. The Charlotte Devereux for EGG collection features many different dresses in a range of colours and fabrics that will flatter your bump instead of hiding it .Go on – bring out the pregnant goddess in you!

4. Balance the shapes
Many of the current fashion trends are really flattering like empire line dresses and tops; trapeze dresses; shifts; leggings and slim cut pants. Just like a non-pregnant silhouette it is important to go for volume up top or on the bottom – not both. Slim cut jeans and tailored pants are effective at balancing looser top garments. For a laidback look match an oversize top or short shift dress with leggings. Leggings (like our Cotton Legs) which are especially designed for pregnancy will be comfortable and also help support your bump.

5. Accessories are your friend
Celebrities are great at accessorizing and you can be too. Buy a fabulous new oversized hand bag just like Nicole’s – it can double as a nappy bag later! The EGG Bambino Bag will also get maxi use to use as an everyday tote before your bundle arrives. Get some gorgeous slouchy new boots – your feet will expand and you will be more comfortable in shoes with give. Bring some variety to your outfits by wrapping a gorgeous scarf around your neck, channelling your inner Kate. When you have your key basic pieces like the Wide Leg Pant and Twist Top by simply adding a fabulous statement necklace and chandelier earrings you can change the look and extend your pregnancy wardrobe.

6. Getting the right fit is essential
It is important to get the right underwear for your changing shape. Breasts swell during pregnancy and the best maternity bras will provide support without rigid underwire that can begin to dig and squeeze. They will also have more hooks for changing the band size than a normal bra and adjustable straps that make them ideal for breastfeeding. Seamless styles like the EGG Flexitube that can be worn as under and outer garments to give you smooth, sleek lines is a key to maternity dressing.

7. Pamper yourself
Make sure you indulge in a relaxing massage or reflexology. This was my one treat when I was pregnant as I figured I was saving on buying the occasional bottle of wine! The EGG Essential Care range does a gorgeous soothing foot gel which you can subtly leave out for your loved one. Don’t forget the EGG Essential Care Rose hip Oil and Belly Butter to keep those stretch marks at bay!

8. Exercise
I have never been great at exercising and with a very busy family and business I find it hard to fit it in however I did make a point of exercising throughout my pregnancy whether it was walking the dog or doing a yoga class it not only helped me mentally it was essential for helping me sleep especially in the last trimester. Make sure you have comfortable clothes – The EGG Cotton Legs and Capsule Top or Seamless Nursing Singlet (yes wear it afterwards) are perfect for all types of exercise

9. Retain your personal style
It’s really important to carry your pre-pregnancy style preferences through to your maternity wardrobe... If you feel your best in smart pants and a shirt don’t suddenly start wearing track pants and your partner’s jeans just because you're pregnant. The same goes with colour – it looks amazing on the pregnant figure and so many women feel they have to stick with black.

May your journey through the next 9 months and beyond be an incredible one - babies truly are the one miracle we have in life.
